King High School was so peaceful; the stillness was striking upon entering the majestic building, for in a few hours this setting would transform into a bustling, exciting, vibrating environment filled with hundreds of people. Before eight o'clock, tables, chairs, chess sets, signs, computers, trophy’s, ribbons, and food appeared, and the chess participants were streaming into the building, checking in, asking questions, and setting up their positions for the day. Everyone was preparing for a wonderful event. There was a coaches meeting before the tournament, 5 rounds played, a second coach meeting, and an awards ceremony. The awards were presented by Mr. Marcus Mundy, Black Star Project, Mr. Darrin Osbourne, Chicago Public Schools Chess Coordinator, and Mr. David Heiser, Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation. The chess tournament was a resounding success due in part to the team effort of the coaches and students to help make this a great experience. We would like to thank everybody who participated and all who came to help, for making this an exceptional event for the CPS students. Congratulations to all the winners & students who placed for the CPS Championship!
