Renaissance Knights kicked off the summer with 57 chess players young and old competing at the 42nd monthly Knights Quest tournament at the Renaissance Hotel in Northbrook on Sunday, June 14. The open section was hard fought until the very end: the last three games to finish in the final round were Board 3, Board 2, and Board 1. On the top board Louis Shekhtman and Thomas Wu battled out a difficult bishop vs. knight endgame that became a pawn endgame. Then Shekhtman won the pawn race to queen and knew how to use his queen to stop Wu's knight pawn on the 7th rank, finally mating with king and queen vs. king. With this win Shekhtman took 1st place with 3.5 points out of 4. Wu took 2nd place on tiebreaks with 3 points, and Jordan Bohmbach, Kevin Kang and James Demos all won their final game to score 3 points and take 3rd, 4th and 5th places. In the under 1400 section Danny Ginzburg dominated, winning all 4 of his games to take 1st place. Andrey Puzanov and Michael Gao scored 3 points to take 2nd and 3rd places, and Rahul Dhiman and Mindren Lu took 4th and 5th places on tiebreaks with 2 points each. In the under 1000 section John Dellamore also scored a perfect 4 points to win 1st place. Steven Zhang, Elliana Faletsky, Michael Wu and Abe Sun all scored 3 points and took 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places. In the under 600 section Shayna Provine achieved a perfect 4 point score as well to win 1st place. Ezra Boldizsar, Frederic Fosco, and Noah Maguigad each got 3 points and took 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. Abdel Raoul took 5th place on tiebreaks with 2 points.
