Northside 9th graders win 3rd place at Illinois All-Grade chess championship;
Christian Kavouras wins 2nd place individual 9th grader

by Jeff Caveney, Renaissance Knights chess instructor and Northside College Prep High School chess coach

Congratulations to Christian Kavouras and Brian Lehman, Northside's freshman representatives at the Illinois All-Grade Chess Championship, who won the 3rd place team trophy for Northside in the 9th grade division with 5.5 total points.

Christian Kavouras also won the 2nd place individual trophy for 9th graders with 3.5 points out of 4. Congratulations Christian!

Northside sophomore Alex Bologna also competed in the 10th grade division. Lehman and Bologna both scored 2 points, and did so against the toughest possible competition. Both won their first two games, which meant they had to face some of the top ranked players in their grades the last two games.

The tournament was held November 13th at Whitney Young. Next up for the entire varsity and JV Northside chess team is the biggest Chicago high school chess competition of the fall: the Prep Bowl this Saturday, November 20th at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).
